Electrolytes are one of the few supplements that genuinely earn their place on a GLP-1 — not because of hype, but because of simple math: you’re taking in a lot less food and fluid, and electrolytes ride in on both. Here’s what actually matters.
Why they matter more now
When appetite drops, three things happen at once: you eat less sodium and potassium (they come from food), you drink less water (you’re just not as thirsty or hungry), and slowed digestion changes how your gut handles fluid. That combination can leave you mildly depleted — and the symptoms are easy to blame on the medication when they’re really about hydration and electrolytes.

- Sugary sports drinks — built for marathoners, heavy on sugar. Choose low- or no-sugar electrolyte options instead.
- “Detox” or “cleanse” electrolyte blends — you want minerals, not a gimmick.
- Mega-dosing — more isn’t better, and if you have kidney, heart, or blood-pressure conditions, or take medications affecting potassium, check with your clinician before adding potassium or magnesium supplements. This caution is the actual rule, not fine print.
